Miguel Del Morales, the 76-year-old troubadour who strums and sings his way through Karim Dridi's uplifting film ''Cuba Feliz,'' embodies the wandering minstrel as a man of the people and the repository of an impoverished nation's hard-won emotional wisdom. As he travels from one city to another in his native Cuba, meeting up with local musicians and jamming with them, Mr. Del Morales, who is known as El Gallo (the Rooster) suggests a Latin-American Willie Nelson (without his band), indefatigably making his way along his country's dusty roads. A wiry, weather-beaten figure, El Gallo, clad in a black tank top and sombrero, is first glimpsed smoking a cigarette and gazing over the Havana harbor as a cargo ship slips into port. The song he sings with an impassioned resignation is a lament of the hardship of life, the passing of time and loves lost but not forgotten. Although ''Cuba Feliz'' has the look and sound of a documentary, it's really a loosely constructed musical road movie with a screenplay (by Pascal Letellier and Mr. Dridi) that follows El Gallo from city to city on a national tour undertaken largely on foot. Toting his guitar, he ambles from Havana to Santiago de Cuba, Guantánamo, Camaguey and Trinidad, ending up back in Havana in the same spot from which he started… LINK youtube Cuba feliz

Presenter Henk Terlingen reports about the moon trip of the Apollo 11 from a studio of the NTS in Hilversum. Rudolf Spoor watches from the control room. Many guests are present in the studio. 
The launch is closely monitored add the Simon Stevin public observatory in Oudenbosch. A temporary base has been set up for this in a school, where antennas are set up. With this the radio contact with the Apollo-11 is collected. A farmer watches the moon landing on television while milking a cow. 
A model simulates the moon landing, where a man blows through a pipe to blow up dust. After the landing there is applaud. 
We (The living room was filled with family and neighbors and me), also watched on a Philips black and white TV at home in Dordrecht to this broadcast I was fifteen years old.

Sita's ordeal by fire

The story: This is a key episode in the Ramayana story, one of the most frequently depicted scenes in classical Balinese paintings. Rawana, demonic king of Langka, kidnapped the goddess Sita and kept her in captivity. After the fall of Langka and the death of Rawana, goddess Sita was reunited with her husband, Rama. But after such a long absence, Rama doubts her faithfulness. Distressed by Rama’s suspicion and in order to demonstrate her purity, Sita orders Laksamana, Rama’s brother, to prepare a pyre into which she jumps. However she is protected by Agni, the god of fire, and the fire turns into a lotus. The scene: Agni can be seen in the centre of the paintings with Sita at his feet in a lotus floating on a pool of water. Both are enclosed in a golden aureole, which indicates a god. The servant figures, Twalen and Merdah are seated on the ground close to Sita. On the right, at the top of the ramp, from which Sita has jumped, are Trijata, Sita’s companion during her captivity, heavenly priests and monkey spectators. Hanoman, the monkey general, is below the ramp. Rama and Laksamana appear on the left of the tree with several gods above them and monkeys and other animal creatures below. Flowers descend from above, as a manifestation of Sita’s purity and favour with the gods.

Simone Veil maakte van 1974 tot 1979 carrière als minister van Volksgezondheid onder presidenten Jacques Chirac en Raymond Barre en was de eerste vrouw op deze positie. In haar eerste jaar als minister van Volksgezondheid zorgt ze voor betere beschikbaarheid van anticonceptiemiddelen. Een jaar later, in 1975, weet ze legalisatie van abortus in Frankrijk te realiseren. In 2010 werd ze als zesde vrouw in de geschiedenis lid van de Académie française, het instituut van de bevordering van de Franse taal. Als lid ontving zij een ceremonieel zwaard waarin drie kenmerkende teksten waren gegraveerd. Het motto van de Franse Republiek, de Europese Unie en het nummer dat op haar arm was getatoeëerd: 78651.

Simone Veil was born in Nice in 1927 as the daughter of a Jewish architect. In 1944, her entire family was arrested and separated from her father and brother, who did not survive the war. Veil made a career from 1974 to 1979 as Minister of Health under Presidents Jacques Chirac and Raymond Barre and was the first woman in this position. In her first year as Minister of Health, she ensures better availability of contraceptives. A year later, in 1975, she managed to realize the legalization of abortion in France. In 2010 she became the sixth woman in history to become a member of the Académie française, the institute for the promotion of the French language. As a member she received a ceremonial sword in which three distinctive texts were engraved. The motto of the French Republic, the European Union and the number that was tattooed on her arm: 78651. 

Simone Veil est née le 13 juillet 1927 à Nice dans une famille juive non pratiquante. Sous l’occupation elle fait transformer son nom d’origine Jacob grâce à de faux papiers mais se fait malgré tout arrêtée avec sa famille par la Gestapo en 1944. Elle est alors transférée dans différents camps dont Auschwitz et Bergen-Belsen. Elle et ses deux sœurs sont les seules survivantes. Elle meurt finalement le 30 juin 2017 à l'âge de 89 ans. Après la guerre, elle entame des études de Droit et entre dans la Magistrature. En 1974, elle entre dans le gouvernement de Jacques Chirac sous la présidence de Valéry Giscard d’Estaing en tant que ministre de la Santé jusqu’en 1979. C’est à elle que l’on doit la loi sur l’interruption volontaire de grossesse (IVG), dépénalisant l’avortement. Votée en 1974, elle entre en vigueur en 1975. Simone Veil a fait face alors à de nombreuses menaces et intimidations mais ce combat lui a apporté une grande popularité. Son parcours politique continue au Parlement Européen dont elle occupe le poste de Présidente de 1979 à 1982. Elle sera par la suite ministre des Affaires sociales, de la Santé et de la Ville dans le gouvernement d’Edouard Balladur en 1993 puis membre du Conseil Constitutionnel entre 1998 et 2007. En dehors de la vie politique, elle a été également Présidente de la Fondation pour la mémoire de la Shoah et en 2010 Simone Veil entre à la prestigieuse Académie française. In this work, the Dutch-Ukrainian writer denounces the at-times lopsided, Western-oriented reporting surrounding the MH17 crash and the current situation in Eastern Ukraine. a story brought to life Looking to experience literature in a new way.
Studio ZZZAP accepted the challenge to convert Indexen voor verwijtbaarheid into virtual reality. The team moved in early 2018 to the countryside around Kiev, where it mapped out digitally the environment of local inhabitants. Studio ZZZAP enrolled the help of young Ukrainians who know the land inside out, carried out extensive background and visual research, and used material provided by Weeda’s relatives, who live in the war zone.

In 2008 Bielski decided to become a professional jazz musician and got his BA at Middlesex University in London. However, in the meantime Jerzy managed to develop his passion for experimental, improvised sounds coming out of his Minimoog synth, playing, recording two albums and touring with a quartet Lanza! To divert from his not always straight path even more, he started his numerous attempts of organising the chaos of free improvisation and his own life, by putting it on paper in the form of dots and lines. 

The work Turning Point from 2015 is the first collaboration of painter Pim Piët with the Polish composer Jerzy Bielski (1984). One speaker had to be mounted outside the panel, and this was a new challenge for Piët, not only in its design but also as a challenge to strengthen the relationship with the painting itself. The rotating object, mounted in the panel becomes the intermediate and seems to catch signals, again blurring the sliding scale of the visual plane towards aural space where boundaries become vague. That idea is exactly how the exhibition design and arrangement came to be. The wall is not only the carrier of the work, but it becomes a part of the overall concept to connect separate works with each other in a new manner. A movement of a visual object through space towards sound/noise. It is the viewer’s task to undergo the musical experience. LINK Jerzy Bielski

Over the course of an extended weekend (11-13 January 2019) a series of events will take place at various in- and outdoor spaces across the city. Its peak will be on Saturday, 12 January. The very heart of Plovdiv will welcome the ceremony. The show, combining music, light and dance, will give the key to the whole year ahead and to the basic concept of the European Capital of Culture project, in which the citizens themselves are not only audiences and actors, but also creators of events. More than 1500 participants from Bulgaria and abroad will recreate on the open stage a large and colorful metaphor of all the main themes of the programme ‘Plovdiv 2019’ and their relationships under the motto ‘Together’. 

В рамките на дългия уикенд през януари (11-13 януари 2019 г.) са планирани серия от събития в различни пространства, открити и закрити сцени в града, които ще имат своята кулминация в съботната вечер на 12 януари 2019 г. Откриването ще бъде в самото сърце на Пловдив. Спектакълът, съчетаващ музика, светлина и танц, ще даде ключ към цялата предстояща година и към основната концепция на проекта Европейска столица на културата, в която самите граждани са не само публика и участници, но и създатели на събитията. Над 1500 участници от България и чужбина ще пресъздадат на открита сцена мащабна и цветна метафора на всички основни теми от програмата на „Пловдив 2019“ и на тяхното свързване под мотото „Заедно“.

Last year, I was visiting my brother-in-law Pieter. It was in his house for the first time. Pieter told me that he was very impressed by the painter Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci when he was a young boy. His way in life was always haunted by his beloved painter. Thus he began to paint and made his life story in paintings by Leonardo da Vinci. In February of 2016, two years after the end of the Maidan protests, writer Lisa Weeda and Robin Alysha Clemens travelled through Ukraine. Lisa wrote a chapbook about it (in Dutch), called ‘De Benen Van Petrovski’.

Lisa Weeda writes prose, theater and non-fiction. In 2015 she graduated from Creative Writing ArtEZ. Lisa makes the literary program Beautiful Words in Utrecht, and teaches at ArtEZ, the Rock Academy and at Het Verhalenhuis. She has published work in Revisor, Tirade, Das Magazin, De Titaan and De Optimist. She was selected for the Slow Writing Lab, for which she traveled to Ukraine to do research on her grandmother's homeland. Pinkas Synagogue (Pinkasova synagoga) Prague

During reconstruction in 1950–1954, the original floor-level as well as the appearance of the synagogue were restored. In following five years, the walls of the synagogue were covered with names of about 78 000 Bohemian and Moravian Jewish victims of Shoah. The names are arranged by communities where the victims came from and complemented with their birth and death date. The memorial was designed by painters Václav Boštík and Jiří John. In 1960 it was opened to public, but it was closed after less than a decade, in 1968, after the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia. It was said that the reason for closing was moisture. After the fall of communistic regime in 1989 the synagogue had been reconstructed for three years and then opened to public, but it took another three years to restore the inscriptions of the names on the walls that were damaged by moisture. Moreover, in 2002, an old enemy of the synagogue – flood – proved its power and the inscriptions had to be restored again. 

On the first floor of the synagogue there is an exhibition of pictures drawn by children in the concentration camp in Theresienstadt. Children did not draw them accidentally but during drawing lessons led by Friedl Dicker-Brandeis (1898–1944), a painter, who studied at Bauhaus, Weimar. Dicker-Brandeis's experience from Bauhaus influenced the conception of her drawing lessons in Theresienstadt. She encouraged children to express themselves in drawing, to grapple with their grim experiences from the ghetto, as well as to capture their memories from home and dreams about the future. Their pictures therefore offer wide-ranged testimony about the daily reality of the ghetto and about individual children. Most of the children, as well as Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, died in Auschwitz. The only witnesses of their lives, their drawings, "survived" because Dicker-Brandeis hid them in Theresienstadt before her deportation to Auschwitz. After the war about 4,500 pictures were handed over to the Jewish Museum in Prague.

The exhibition of prints and printing blocks offers a closer view of the graphic art by the sculptor František Bílek. Bílek used wood, his most favorite sculptural material, in the technique of woodcut, on which he focused after 1905 and in which he carried out most of his prints. His virtuoso way of working with the structure of wood, as evidenced by the details of printing blocks, enhanced the dramatic character of his woodcuts, whose expressive blackand-white language based on the contrast of light and shadow allowed him to capture the transcendental spiritual light. For Bílek, the symbolism of light was essential; he elaborated on it in theory as well as in the process of creating his entire multilayered oeuvre. Some of his prints are accompanied by individual words or the whole text, through which Bílek communicated his relativem complicated messages both in graphic art and his other works. Words are in the form of a stylized ornamental Gothic typeface, incorporated into the border of printing plates.

Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso was a Cuban singer and the most popular Latin artist of the 20th century, gaining twenty-three gold albums during her career. She received a star in the “Walk Of Fame” in Hollywood. The U.S. President Bill Clinton awarded her the National Medal of Arts in 1994. She was renowned internationally as the "Queen of Salsa", "La Guarachera de Cuba", as well as "The Queen of Latin Music". She spent much of her career working in the United States and several Latin American countries. Leila Cobo of Billboard Magazine once said "Cruz is indisputably the best known and most influential female figure in the history of Cuban and Latin music". She was an ambassador for the variety and vitality of the music of her native Havana, and after the Cuban revolution she became a symbol of artistic freedom for Cuban American exiles. LINK Youtube

Victor Borge

Rosenbaum (Borge) was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, into a Jewish family. Borge began piano lessons at the age of two, and it was soon apparent that he was a prodigy. He gave his first piano recital when he was eight years old, and in 1918 was awarded a full scholarship at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, studying under Olivo Krause. Later on, he was taught by Victor Schiøler, Liszt's student Frederic Lamond, and Busoni's pupil Egon Petri. Borge played his first major concert in 1926 at the Danish Odd Fellow Palæet (The Odd Fellow's Lodge building) concert hall. After a few years as a classical concert pianist, he started his now famous "stand-up" act, with the signature blend of piano music and jokes. He married American Elsie Chilton in 1933, the same year he debuted with his revue acts. Borge started touring extensively in Europe, where he began telling anti-Nazi jokes. When the German armed forces occupied Denmark on April 9, 1940, during World War II, Borge was playing a concert in Sweden and managed to escape to Finland. He traveled to America on the United States Army transport American Legion, the last neutral ship to make it out of Petsamo, Finland and arrived 28 August 1940. Even though Borge did not speak a word of English upon arrival, he quickly managed to adapt his jokes to the American audience, learning English by watching movies. He took the name of Victor Borge, and in 1941, he started on Rudy Vallee's radio show. He was hired soon after by Bing Crosby for his Kraft Music Hall program. Borge used physical and visual elements in his live and televised performances. He would play a strange-sounding piano tune from sheet music, looking increasingly confused; turning the sheet upside down or sideways, he would then play the actual tune, flashing a joyful smile of accomplishment to the audience (he had, at first, been literally playing the tune upside down or sideways). When his energetic playing of another song would cause him to fall off the piano bench, he would open the seat lid, take out the two ends of an automotive seat belt, and buckle himself onto the bench, "for safety." Conducting an orchestra, he might stop and order a violinist who had played a sour note to get off the stage, then resume the performance and have the other members of the section move up to fill the empty seat while they were still playing.
