In his most recent work, Jurjen Ravenhorst has abandoned all representation. For years, his work was characterized by – often small – elements, such as houses, that transformed abstract figures and forms into references to landscapes and narratives. His recent, purely abstract work reveals even more clearly where Jurjen’s true focus and interests lie: he is an investigator who experiments with materials and techniques, responding to the work as the process unfolds. His prints are the product of a dialogue between the artist and the work he creates. He delves into traditional techniques and adapts them to his own vision. His work is multifaceted, deeply crafted, and well-conceived.

Reminder
The work of Jurjen that I saw during my time at the Royal Academy in The Hague, consisted of highly detailed drawings translated into printmaking – many of them lithographs. The atmosphere of these lithographs evoked the feeling of setting off on a journey to Italy or the South of France. These skillfully crafted pieces often depicted stylized houses set within an abstract environment. In contrast, the work of Jurjen’s that I have seen on social media over the past few years is highly abstract! It features very fine grids that form a structure reminiscent of the complex weavings found in Bulgaria’s Rhodope region. I am ready to travel again!
