Victor Jara

Zamba del Che

Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez was a Chilean teacher, theatre director, poet, singer-songwriter, and political activist. A distinguished theatre director, he developed Chilean theatre by directing a broad array of works, ranging from locally produced Chilean plays, to the classics of the world stage, to the experimental work of such playwrights as Ann Jellicoe. He also played a pivotal role among neo-folkloric musicians who established the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement; this led to an uprising of new sounds in popular music during the administration of Salvador Allende. Shortly after the Chilean coup of 11 September 1973, Jara was arrested; he was tortured under interrogation and ultimately shot dead. His body was later thrown out into the street of a shanty town in Santiago. The contrast between the themes of his songs, on love, peace and social justice and the brutal way in which he was murdered transformed Jara into a "potent symbol of struggle for human rights and justice" for those killed during the Pinochet regime. LINK youtube LINK Extra

Philip Akkerman a part of the Caldic collection. Photo dolf pauw

The new exhibition building for the Caldic Collection consists of a long sand-coloured building located at the Voorlinden estate - in a grass field at the edge of a forest - and features circa 6.700 m². The exhibition building has three components: alternating expositions, a fixed collection and space for displaying permanent pieces. They have been supplemented by supporting and generic functions, like a shop, auditorium, educational space, restoration workshop and a library. A visit to the exhibition building will be a complete experience, for which a number of ingredients are already present. The entrance to the park, with its view of the fields, the special atmosphere of the early 20th century patrician’s house, the walk through and along the garden and the many views across the estate. Opens in 2016

La Cité du Vin

Situated in Bordeaux, La Cité du Vin is a unique venue for culture and recreation where wine comes to life through an immersive, sensorial approach, all set within an evocative architectural design. La Cité du Vin gives a different view of wine, across the world, across the ages, across all cultures and all civilisations. At first sight, the architecture of the building certainly makes an impact. It is a journey in itself, creating a place filled with symbols of identity: the knotted vine stocks, wine turning in the glass, the swirls and eddies of the Garonne river. Each and every architectural detail evokes liquid elements and the very soul of wine. Comprising more than 13,350m2 spread over ten levels and reaching a height of 55 metres, La Cité du Vin invites you to step in and explore. The bold architectural design by architects Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières from XTU architects is impressive for its shape and audacious curves, as well as its ever-changing reflections depending on the season, the day or the time. Allow yourself to be transported by this sensation of movement, of uninterrupted flow between the exterior and interior of the structure. Set off on your wine adventure beneath the wooden vault of the torus which reminds us of the massive hull of a ship putting to sea. LINK laciteduvin

Rabin Huissen

'Evolving Works'
til June 11, 2016 @ Phoebus

Rabin Huissen (Rotterdam, NL) is a conceptual artist whose works document his relationship to and journeys in the urban realm through ink drawings, paper cut-out collages, polaroid photography, and installations. In various ways, he investigates his presence while being present in time and place, by capturing fleeting moments in the here and now, as well as the past. Mostly sketching while traveling and being in movement, he later revives and re-enacts these experiences, mere moments after they lost their topicality. read more… LINK phoebus.nl

Jan Smejkal

@ Phoebus galeriespace beletage and several outdoor areas

Jan Smejkal exhibits on the long wall in the gallery space of beletage Phoebus Rotterdam an installation with text works include names of artists. It is about individual elements independently and indifferent compositions may function. combines Smejkal these works, unexpectedly, with spray paintings, in which the acrylic paint immediately sprang to the canvas and the time of commencement and termination are recorded on the reverse side of the cloth. The works show fresh colors, rhythmic, yet gentle contrasts - cuddly and painterly. Outside hangs a - out of context, but fantastic !! - Text painting to a tree on the Westersingel. In the garden of Phoebus Rotterdam a mirror Tisch. During Poetry International, 8-12 June Jan Smejkal shows text paintings in Witte de With kwartier - so be placed loosely on the street. And tables with text - in this case the names of poets - in the RO Theater. These works are sold after Poetry on Internet.
