Aura Seltzer is a habitual list maker who is interested in how typography can use humor to engage and inform an audience. Type Connection is her MFA thesis project.
Start by choosing a typeface to pair. Like a conventional dating website, Type Connection presents you with potential “dates” for each main character without the misleading profile photos and commitment phobes. The game features well known, workhorse typefaces and portrays each as a character searching for love. You are the matchmaker. You decide what kind of match
to look for by choosing among several strategies for combining typefaces. Along the way, you explore typographic terminology, type history, and more. By playing Type Connection, you deepen your own connection with type.

ARISTS' EDITIONS ISSUE NR. 60 "SOUNDS" JÖRG IMMENDORFF OHNE TITEL (2005)
Without doubt Jörg Immendorff is one of the internationally most renowned and known German artists of the postwar period. Since the late sixties, the Düsseldorf-based artist continuously has been dealing with the political claims and contemporary possibilities of history painting. In large-scale cycles of painting such as the „Café Deutschland“ series from the mid-eighties, Immendorff repeatedly reacted to political everyday events and linked them to German history and the tradition of a politically engaged practice of painting in affluent allegorical tableaus. In these works he also always reflected on his own role and practice as an artist, for instance when self-portraits entered the space of his canvases.

Anna Skladmann by Gang of Berlin
6th–30th of March 2012 Tuesday to Friday 12–7pm Torstrasse 109
Anna Skladmann debuts a new series of photographs: 1991 – Generation Putin. Completed in the past year and shot in several Russian cities, the portraits depict the generation born in the year 1991, and though them, explore what it meant growing up in rapidly changing Russia, in addition to reflections on the volatile political climate. Inspired by the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism, the series explores the impact this historical event had on the lives of those coming of age in its wake. They were raised in a time of liberty and chaos, and their youth was dominated by Vladimir Putin, who ruled the country for the last 12 years. This generation was not able to play by old rules of the Soviet Union, however new ones were yet to be formed. Skladmann depicts the generation that is now taking to the streets calling for change. Anna Skladmann herself calls her work a form of social documentary...

Allegories & Experiences

Bullock's installation consists of 24 found images, each of an individual or group from the Russian power elite: politicians, businessmen, lawyers and journalists. Some are tyrants, some are criminals, and some are victims. The 24 images represent 24 frames per second—the standard in motion picture film speed, hence the underlying visual of film in the exhibition's aesthetic. In the manner of Richard Prince, Jenny Holzer and Ilya Kabakov, each image is accompanied by a provocative title and a story in both English and Russian.

Valerius de Saedeleer

Belgian painter. He learnt the art of weaving from his father and studied at academies in Aalst and Ghent and in the studio of Franz Courtens. After a turbulent period in Ghent, where he was active in anarchist circles, in 1898 he settled in Sint Martens Latem. There he had close ties with like-minded artists. He painted panoramic views of the flat landscape of the Leie in late autumn, winter and early spring. Small houses, hedges and finely-drawn branches stand out against the extensive landscape and vast skies. The contrast between sharply-drawn detail and panoramic views resembled the landscape vision of Pieter Bruegel. He achieved a timeless, unreal atmosphere by applying thin, smooth brushstrokes of colour with a dominance of white, green or grey.

Rotterdam Museum Night 2012

The theme of the Rotterdam Museum Night 2012 is TASTE. You can’t argue about taste. Or can you? It can indeed be food for a tasty discussion. Taste is difficult to explain and can lead to lively debates and extreme opinions. It is a mysterious phenomenon because of the various senses involved. In short: taste is emotion!

Dreams of nature. Symbolism from Van Gogh to Kandinsky @ Van Gogh Museum

The exhibition will cover a wide range of artists, from forerunners of symbolism, like Böcklin and Whistler, to Mondrian and Kandinsky, who provided the impulse for major 20th-century movements, such as surrealism and abstraction. Works by renowned painters, like Monet, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Munch, will be presented alongside lesser known, but equally fascinating artists from the Nordic countries and Eastern Europe.
A visit to the Van Gogh Museum is a unique experience. The museum contains the largest collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh in the world. It provides the opportunity to keep track of the artist's developments, or compare his paintings to works by other artists from the 19th century in the collection.
