Vlisco textiles @ mmka

The exhibition Six Yards is a tribute to Vlisco textiles: over a hundred years old, born in Indonesia, designed in the Netherlands, loved in Africa, and desired in the West. These colourful fabrics make their way to fashion shows in Paris, the markets in Ghana, and galleries in London and New York. The exhibition Six Yards focuses on all the relevant angles, from their presence and meaning in the work of artist Yinka Shonibare, to the stories in the oral tradition that have come from the fabrics.

In 2010 Latifa was invited to participate in the Currents series.  Each artist in the series is provided access to our permanent collection and asked to present a body of work that is inspired by what they find.  Latifa chose to consider lithographs from the Schiller Collection. Made from 1930-1950, most of the prints look at economic, political and social issues in America.  Over the last several years Latifa has created projects that consider cultural icons and the ways in which people use or abuse ideas around difference.  Her interest in the democratic nature of printing has been a part of a few of these projects...

Besides working under the name "maculature" Professor Panayotov will also show pictures made by the so-called its technology "dagotipiya" based on his philosophy about the relationship of artist to material and spiritual, and his choice for what both accepted and rejected. The technology really shows how intentions and pasting their ideas on the white sheet image is obtained by three-dimensional relief in two-dimensional plane. The Cirque Calder can be seen as the start of Calder's interest in both wire sculpture and kinetic art. He maintained a sharp eye with respect to the engineering balance of the sculptures and utilized these to develop the kinetic sculptures Duchamp would ultimately dub as "mobiles", a French pun meaning both "mobile" and "motive." He designed some of the characters in the circus to perform suspended from a thread. However, it was the mixture of his experiments to develop purely abstract sculpture following his visit with Mondrian that lead to his first truly kinetic sculptures, manipulated by means of cranks and pulleys...

Изложбата e трета от поредицата „Макулатура“ и е продължение на първата изложба представена през 2006 година. Експозицията е съставена от цветни работи върху хартия, от последните две години, които са организирани в няколко тематични цикъла. Единият от тях е под наименованието „АЕЦ Чернобил и Фокушима“, провокирал автора след голямото бедствие сполетяло Япония през 2011 година.

The Pop Award (Popprijs) is presented to the Dutch artist who has made the most significant contribution to Dutch pop music in the previous year. The Popprijs 2011 has been won by De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig. The Pop Award is an initiative of BV POP, and is awarded by Buma Cultuur with support of Sena Performers.

If we generally tend to regard seeing as a way of knowing, of gathering knowledge about the world around us, then we also usually consider staring as its exact opposite: a way of not seeing and therefore not knowing, a way of closing our eyes whilst leaving them open. Stefan Annere explores the possibility of reversing this logic. Here, staring becomes an alternative to seeing: a nexus of visual possibilities that may hold the promise to correct, complement, and possibly even to supplant our ordinary vision, although it is never quite certain whether that promise can be kept.

Joan Nelson

Joan Nelson is well known for her paintings that incorporate multiple pictorial landscape traditions and pay homage to and borrow from artists such as Albrecht Altdorfer, Albert Bierstadt, George Caleb Bingham and Casper David Friedrich. Occupying a unique place in the long history of landscape painting, Nelson's works simultaneously speak to the experience of landscape and the complexity of representation, artfully incorporating reality, memory and mediated experience.

Aimée de Jongh

She literally draws every single day and now works for about 6 years as a professional illustrator and comic artist. In 2006 BeeDee published her first book, called "Aimée TV". Her style in drawing is influenced by the Japanese manga comics, yet she gives it her own, recognizable touch. 

From 2007, Aimée is also an Animation student at the Willem de Kooning Academy. She prefers to draw every frame to establish a pure and handdrawn effect. When making films, she's part of the whole process - from storyboard to sound editing.

Rendered in soft, pastel palettes, her figures are humanised with a sentimental goofiness that belies their zealous bravado.

dutch avant-garde in an international context, 1961-1966 @ Schiedams museum

nul = 0 is the first comprehensive overview in the Netherlands of work by members of the Nul-group and international kindred spirits since 1965. Work of Dutch Nul-artists – Armando, Jan Henderikse, Henk Peeters, Jan Schoonhoven and herman de vries – will be displayed in relation to artists from the German ZERO, the French Nouveau Réalisme, the Italian Azimuth and the Japanese Gutai movements in the time period 1961-1966.

A stitch a day...

Much of the preserved embroidery in this exhibition is by women who ended up in prison or in concentration camps because of their part in the Resistance. Embroidery by women in the Japanese camps in the Dutch East Indies is also shown.

ON EXPEDITION

From September 16 on, the museum garden of Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden has as if by magic turned into one big exploring-expedition ground. Large expedition cases are placed in the garden. As if a ship has just returned from a distant and foreign country and has left her cargo behind here. The cases create an interactive exhibition about legendary expeditions of the past and the present.

Yesterday Eve

New Year 2012 officially kicks off in Rotterdam with the National Firework Show at the Erasmus Bridge. Both the bridge and a floating pontoon on the river Maas form a marvellous architectural stage setting with the various docks as a natural grandstand for the biggest fireworks show in the Netherlands.
