Photographs: The Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto.
The Royal Alexandra Theatre: A Celebration of 100 Years, is as much a history of a famous building as it is an account of a century of Toronto’s cultural development. When Cawthra “the boy millionaire” Mulock opened his Royal Alexandra in 1907, Toronto had a population of less than half a million and was just the second largest city in Canada; Brockhouse’s meticulously research tells the story of how a city and its most famous stage grew up together. Throughout, the book is lavishly illustrated with archival photographs and candid shots. Its crowning glory, though, is a new commissioned photo essay by Edward Burtynsky, which captures the theatre in its stately glory and the backstage area in its charming squalor. LINK walrusmagazine

Tate Modern is staging the first ever international, full-scale survey of the work of Mira Schendel (1919 - 1988) until 19 January 2014. Schendel is one of Latin America's most important and prolific post-war artists. Alongside her contemporaries Lygia Clark and Helio Oiticica, Schendel reinvented the language of European Modernism in Brazil. The show exemplifies how Tate is continuing to rethink and re-present the history of modern and contemporary art by showing artists who established their careers outside Europe and the USA. The exhibition brings together over 300 paintings, drawings and sculptures from across her entire career, many of which have never been exhibited before. Highlights include her Droguinhas (Little Nothings) 1965 - 6, soft sculptures of knotted rice paper in the form of malleable nets, originally exhibited in London (Signals Gallery, 1966); and the Graphic Objects 1967 - 8, a group of works that explore language and poetry and were first shown at the 1968 Venice Biennale. Lunacharsky is a Kaliningrad born sculptural artist who died in 2008 at the age of 30 without ever having exhibited his work. In a way, Topp & Dubio continue Lunacharsky's art practice by handling and rearranging his works and preparing it to be shown publically without having any knowledge of Lunacharsky's intentions or knowing how to do this properly. Continuously, Topp & Dubio started a never ending dialogue with Lunacharsky by creating project based works that respond to the major themes in Lunacharsky's artworks: space, time, energy, history and human existence. By doing so, The exhibition shows both of their work in retrospective. Side by side or face to face. Or both.
В рамках образовательной программы к выставке "Бок о бок:
Topp & Dubio против Юрий Луначарский", которая до 20 октября проходит в выставочном зале Балтийского филиала Государственного центра современного искусства, состоялись музейные занятия, вдохновленные художественным "космосом" Юрий Луначарский. Школьники не только познакомились с концепцией выставки, различными формами презентации современного искусства, но и провели ассоциативные мосты между работами голландского дуэта и калининградского художника, а также выразили свое мнение относительно выставки в виде принтов на футболках. From Vidin to Paris exhibition

Jules Pascin, was born on March 31 1885 in Bulgaria’s Danubian city of Vidin. In 1892, his family moved to Bucharest. Pascin graduated from high school in Vienna. Between 1902 and 1905 he received training at the art academies in Vienna, Budapest, Munich and Berlin. He contributed to the “Simplicissimus“ magazine published in Munich. In 1905, he moved to Paris, where he met his future wife, Hermine David. In 1907, he organized his first solo exhibition at Paul Cassirer’s gallery in Berlin. In 1914 he left for New York, where he lived until 1920. He travelled to the Southern states and Cuba. Then he went back to Paris, where he lived until his death in 1930.
Peintre emblématique de l’Ecole de Paris, Jules Pascin, né à Vidin en Bulgarie en 1885, symbolise à lui seul l’histoire culturelle de l’Europe, la circulation des idées et des talents. Après une expérience allemande formatrice et réussie (Munich, Berlin), il choisit Paris et devient célèbre, voyage puis s’installe définitivement à Paris où il se suicide dans son atelier en 1930, persuadé d’avoir atteint la limite de sa créativité artistique. Initiée par l’ambassade de France en Bulgarie et organisée par l’Institut français en partenariat avec la Galerie municipale, l’exposition rassemble 115 œuvres issues de collections privées, dont certaines n’ont jamais été exposées au grand public. Les œuvres proviennent de Paris, Londres, Tel-Aviv, Luxembourg et Oslo.

Post Sofia: Limited Protesters Today

While some people in Bulgaria joined the protests against both governments, and while there were small amounts of protesters who were out on the streets throughout the spring of 2013 and effectively "linked" the two series of protests, the reasons that sparked off the two waves were different.
The winter protests began due to high electricity prices and morphed into anti-GERB protests, while the summer anti-BSP/MRF protests were sparked by the election of media magnate Delyan Peevski to head the national security service.
Many of the people who participated in both waves of protests are unhappy with the oligarchic model of governance that they claim has taken hold in Bulgaria, which leads to monopolies or near-monopolies in many spheres, such as energy (central to the winter protests), banking and media (central to the summer protests). These, in turn, are perceived as having a strong influence on the nation's political scene. LINK Protest Bulgaria

Stoyan Sertev was born in Nova Zagora. He had played the violin since his childhood and at the age of about 20 he left for Sofia, where he made his living by playing in restaurant bands and by recording sound for silent films in cinema halls. Due to the lack of money he could not graduate from the Musical Academy but he had free lessons with Hristo Petkov, the father of the conductor Dobrin Petkov. In the musical milieus the name of Stoyan Sertev is connected with the National Opera orchestra and with the rich artistic history of the famous in the near past “Lechev” and “Avramov” quartets, where he played second violin. In his free time he was involved in photography - a passion of his since his adolescence, when he made his own camera out of a tin with a hole drilled in it, instead of lens. He made his first attempts, collected in an album, following German recipes for toning photographs. His huge archive has kept hundreds of frames from 1939 till the end of his life. He mainly shot works of art and their creators, architectural projects, theatrical and opera performances.

Eleanor Antin, born in New York City in 1935, is an influential artist and writer. A pioneer of performance, photography, film, video, installation and Conceptual art, her humorous and often tragic works are grounded in narratives that engage history, identity and feminism. This exhibition will, for the first time, focus on the videos, photographic series, drawings and installations that express the "selves" she created and embodied between 1972 and 1991. Volkspaleis film project The Lost

The Volkspaleis is a multidisciplinary event where West will show among other things the magnificent, monumental film project The Lost by the internationally renowned American artist Reynold Reynolds. The turbine hall is perfectly suited to show the film consisting of seven screens averaging a width of 8 metres. The project is based on rediscovered film footage from the thirties, a period of severe economic crisis. The film is about the life of a young writer who lives in a Berlin hotel together with other performers, dancers and musicians.
At the time the original film couldn’t be completed due to the upcoming Nazi regime. LINK West
