Kerry James Marshall

Kerry James Marshall (b. October 17, 1955) is an artist born in Birmingham, Alabama. He grew up in South Central Los Angeles and now lives in Chicago where he previously taught at the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a 1978 graduate of Otis College of Art and Design.

Although he currently lives and works in Chicago, Illinois, his time spent in Watts, Los Angeles, California where he observed the Black Power and Civil Rights movements had a significant impact on his paintings [1]). Strongly influenced by his experiences as a young man, he developed a signature style during his early years as an artist that involved the use of extremely dark, essentially black figures. These images represent his perspective of African Americans with separate and distinct inner and outer appearances. At the same time, they confront racial stereotypes within contemporary American society.[2] This common theme appeared continuously in his work throughout the subsequent decades, especially in the 1980s and 1990s.

Stolperstein

@ Nieuwe Binnenweg Rotterdam

The artist Gunter Demnig remembers the victims of National Socialism by installing commemorative brass plaques in the pavement in front of their last address of choice. There are now STOLPERSTEINE (lit. “stumbling stones or blocks”) in over 610 places in Germany as well as in Austria, Hungary, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Norway and Ukraine. Gunter Demnig says that "a person is only forgotten when his or her name is forgotten". The Stolpersteine in front of the buildings bring back to memory the people who once lived here. Each “stone” begins with HERE LIVED… One “stone”. One name. One person. LINK Stolperstein

Elías García Martínez

On Monday, August 6th, a group from the Centro de Estudios Borjanos (CESBOR), an institution dedicated to research and support of the history and culture of the small town of Borja, outside Zaragoza in the autonomous region of Aragon, northeastern Spain, visited a local church to examine the condition of a certain fresco. The painting on the wall of the church of the Sanctuary of Mercy was the only work in town done by turn of the century artist Elías García Martínez and one of his granddaughters had just donated money to restore it. The fresco, a 20-by-15-inch portrait of Christ wearing the crown of thorns called Ecce Homo, was in poor condition. Water leaks and salt damage left the paint flaking off so that in the past 10 years it had gone from looking like this:

The Celebration of Britain Music Silver Coin

The inscription, ‘All you need is love’, by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, links to the nation’s love of sport while the design of Cornelia Parker’s sculpture ‘Breathless’ is how people will feel with the excitement the London 2012 Games will bring.
British popular music originated in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries with the arrival of the broadside ballad. Then came the brass bands, still popular today, followed by the music halls of the Victorian era and the early twentieth-century dance bands. In the early 1960s The Beatles arrived and set the standard for popular music.

Readymade 2012 (DPhoto)

Marcel Duchamp, Bicycle Wheel, 1913

"Readymades" were found objects which Duchamp chose and presented as art. In 1913, Duchamp installed a Bicycle Wheel in his studio. However, the idea of Readymades did not fully develop until 1915. The idea was to question the very notion of Art, and the adoration of art, which Duchamp found "unneccessary".

Collages out of Metro Cards

Discarded MetroCards can be found strewn around any subway station, carelessly thrown aside by subway riders when they expire or funds are used up. Seeing this litter as the perfect medium, Boesch collects them, and gives them new life. Many of the artist’s collages are inspired by the MTA and subway transit system itself.
Using the limited colors of the cards - blue, orange, yellow, black and white - Boesch has created a body of work that pays tribute to the subways and New York. LINK Nina Boesch

Mirador House

2.8x Architects
have designed the Mirador House in Lima, Peru.

This project, commissioned by a very particular client, takes place in a residential neighborhood in the east of the city of Lima. The challenge: to solve the program and user requirements on uneven ground with a very steep double. The location of the lot and the view of a portion of the city would be crucial for the development of the proposal. The main objective of the customer, an elderly lady, was to begin a new phase in her life and felt an air of renewal and modernity. The project should respond to this need and ensure the functional comfort for daily functioning. LINK Mirador House

According to modern Olympic tradition, the host country for the Games is responsible for creating an emblem to be used on promotional materials, by sponsors of the Olympics, and on the uniforms of every Olympic competitor. Francis Alÿs

Fabiola @ Museo Amparo Mexico

July 7 - October 15, 2012

Museo Amparo inaugurated the exhibition Francis Alÿs. Fabiola, presented in the museum's Colonial Art and Nineteenth Century galleries. The exhibition features more than four hundred images of
St. Fabiola, acquired over more than a decade by Francis Alÿs, the Belgian artist settled in Mexico.

The collection, where every work is a hand-made reproduction of an original painted by the academic artist Jean-Jacques Henner in 1885, displays at once a disconcerting homogeneity. As curator Lynne Cook notes, the exhibition poses historical and aesthetic questions generally associated with the great masters of the past, and touches upon essential art topics such as authorship, iconography, function, originality, and collecting, among others. Although at first glance the works appear monotonously similar, on closer examination many differences appear. In general, they encompass a broad range with variations that go from the media used - oil painting, embroidery, enamel, and, in a particularly memorable instance, seeds and beans - to the dazzling variety of technical skill displayed by their creators, most being the work of amateurs.

Statue of Czar Peter the Great (1672-1725)

Caitlin and Brent likes Peter the Great

The statue is a gift from the Russian Federation to the city of Rotterdam and is located almost at the entrance of the Veerhaven. (Veerhaven means Ferry Harbour, as this used to be the place from where the ferry crossed the river Maas. Until the Willems Bridge was completed it was the only way to get to the other side of the river!)

Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art

The 2nd Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art

September 13 - October 22, 2012

In 2010, the 1st Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art took over factory spaces in and around Ekaterinburg to take on the problems of material and symbolic production, industrial and artistic labor, the industrial and the post-industrial in the context of the city of Ekaterinburg and the Ural region. Once the center of the Soviet industrialization drive and a world-renown destination for Constructivist architecture, now the region is defined by its "intermediate" economy.
It is neither post-industrial Europe, nor industrial Asia, but rather, a hybrid that links the two, thereby giving a global significance to the local socioeconomic situation.

The 2nd Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art develops the key concepts of set by the first, with a focus on the possibilities of going beyond the binary of production vs. consumption in artistic, cultural, and social spheres. The biennale will explore the potential of contemporary art as a means to appropriate and reconfigure (non)exhibition spaces and local audiences. With a roster of exhibitions in a variety of venues (including both operating and abandoned factories of the Ural region), the Biennial will both re-conceptualize the cultural forms of the industrial era and actualize the productive dimension of contemporary artistic processes.

The Netherlands is famous for its windmills. Today there are still more than 1.000 mills. Nowhere in the world you will find as many windmills as near (the Dutch village) Kinderdijk. Around 1740 no less than 19 sturdy mills were built here. They have been well preserved to the present day. LINK Kinderdijk

The Walls Have Ears

'The Walls Have Ears' is a creative project by Bread Collective, working with the community of Hackney Wick to improve our area by painting murals. We are supported by the London Legacy Development

Meldola’s Blue dye was invented in Hackney Wick by British chemist and entomologist Raphael Meldola. Meldola was a Professor of Organic Chemistry in the University of London, 1912–5. This dye is used in textiles, paper, and paints, mainly as a pigment. Meldola’s Blue has been used as a component in redox sensors for detection of materials such as NADH, pyruvates, hydrogen peroxide, glucose, and 3-hydroxy- butyrate. It has also been used in electrochemical experiments involving DNA wherein the dye mediates electron transport.

The 2012 Olympic site has claimed industrial premises formerly used by British Industrial Gases (later British Oxygen Company, BOC) to manufacture oxygen and acetylene.
