Calendars
Calendars have always been an important part of human life, keeping us updated about passing days, weeks, months, seasons and years or even ages. However, there has been a great shift in the form of calendars, which nowadays other than fulfilling their primary function are fast becoming a piece of functional art to decorate contemporary apartments.

EAST of BEST @ Roodkapje
EAST of BEST shows 14 young Bulgarian contemporary artists.
The selected works represent a second generation of artists after the changes in 1989. They are not entangled in the periphery's schizophrenic identity that formed the 90s to the 21st century artistic production. The "new" works are inquiries and interventions into the present referring to politics and economy; to culture, memory and identity; to the world of things and the world of images; to aesthetic and theoretic discourses. Moreover, the presented artists are actively involved in cultural and political debates within Bulgaria; most of them have been nominated for, or won local awards for contemporary art such as the renowned BAZA, Gaudenz B. Ruf and M-Tel awards.

Gerco de Ruijter
"How abstract can a landscape become while remaining a landscape?" de Ruijter suggests that "all of these objects arranged to form rows create a new form of abstraction, not because of the image’s emptiness but, to the contrary, because of the presence of so many 'things,' and their patterns and rhythms," as if we could farm and harvest barcodes directly from the ground.

Machiel BOTMAN @ Gitterman Gallery
Gitterman Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of black and white photographs by Machiel Botman. The exhibition will open on Wednesday, December 14th and continue through, February 18th.
This exhibition of Machiel Botman’s black and white photographs from the past ten years is concurrent with the release of his third monograph, One Tree (Nazraeli Press, 2011). A key figure in Dutch photography, Botman has always photographed as a way to understand life. He is not restrained by photographic conventions; rather, Botman utilizes a variety of exposures, depths of field and focal distances, resulting in a style that is uniquely his own. His books are equally singular. They are autobiographical and chronicle the stages in his life, but they do not follow a linear narrative.

Mladen Stilinović: Insulting Anarchy
I wanted to make an anarchical exhibition including works that differ stylistically and thematically, but no matter how I place the works, I always seem to get a structure far from being anarchical. That is the reason why this exhibition is entitled Insulting the anarchy. This title is of course an alibi for all of mine insanities and impertinences, for my artistic »freedom«. My aim is to have many voices, not just one voice...

Johan Gustavsson
The work originates from very strenuous – almost meditative – moments the artist actively seeks. This way all his prior emotions unite and this enables him to entrust the ‘sum’ unto paper. So he is not just a contemplator but also a participant in his world. Themes as aesthetic, the position of the artist in the art world and the way art relates to society mix easily with ordinary themes as family, relations, politics, fashion, security, freedom and melancholy.

Daan van Golden @ De Hallen Haarlem
By devoting a solo exhibition to Daan van Golden (Rotterdam, 1936) the museum wants to emphasise the unabated importance of his work and show in which ways a younger generation of artists associates itself with it. Van Golden is a typical artist’s artist, whose artistic views have particularly met with response among his colleagues. Van Golden has never been too concerned about prevailing artistic trends and has always carved his own path. In the last few years the international recognition for his work has soared: the large retrospective Red or blue was shown in London, Geneva and Lisbon. The exhibition in De Hallen Haarlem comprises a selection of his paintings spanning a period of 50 years.

André Kruysen
André Kruysen's sculpture encompasses many contradictions. The sacred effect of light stands in sharp contrast to the fast-moving image culture we inhabit and which is a ubiquitous presence in every area of our lives. Kruysen is inspired by the chaos that surrounds us, but seeks to distil a meditative experience from it.

Building the Revolution @ Royal Academy of Arts in London
Havsko Shabolovski residential block and the radio tower Shabolovka, Moscow
This exhibition examines Russian avant-garde architecture made during a brief but intense period of design and construction that took place from c.1922 to 1935. Fired by the Constructivist art that emerged in Russia from c.1915, architects transformed this radical artistic language into three dimensions, creating structures whose innovative style embodied the energy and optimism of the new Soviet Socialist state.

Claire Harvey
photography by Gert Jan van Rooij
Claire Harvey's work consists of solitary figures engaged in day to day activities. It is amazing to see how well she had captured the mood of the subjects in her work considering how small the pieces were. The size, spacing, and subject matter of her work had an amazing ability to block out all the 'noise' of the exhibition.

Medalliwood
MSSS’s “Medallic marathon” continues in 2011. Professor Bogomil choose this humorous title for the new 2011 Medal Project. The project consists of seven medallic art sessions – from February to May and from October to December. Although the participants in the project enjoy full freedom of choice of subject, materials and techniques, each session has its own theme, setting a framework of particular universal problems. The idea is for each of the seven medallic sessions, and respectively exhibitions, to have an atmosphere of its own. Furthermore, different approaches to and interpretations of the same subject are of great interest to students. Via: Panayot Panayotov-Paneto (BG)
