Leandro Erlich

Dalston House
26 June 2013 - 4 August 2013
1-7 Ashwin Street, Dalston

Internationally known for captivating, three-dimensional visual illusions, Argentine artist Leandro Erlich has been commissioned by the Barbican to create Dalston House, an installation in Hackney.
The work resembles a movie set, featuring the façade of a late nineteenth-century Victorian terraced house. The life-size façade lies on the ground with a mirrored surface positioned overhead at a 45-degree angle. By sitting, standing or lying on the horizontal surface, visitors appear to be scaling or hanging off the side of the building.
Sited at 1 - 7 Ashwin Street, near Dalston Junction, Erlich has designed and decorated the façade - complete with a door, windows, mouldings and other architectural details - to evoke the houses that previously stood on the block. Leandro Erlich: Dalston House opens on 26 June 2013 and is presented on Ashwin Street in association with OTO Projects. It is also part of the 2013 London Festival of Architecture. LINK barbican

Eggcubism As a painter I consider eggtrays as two-and-a-half dimensional objects which offer me remarkable possibilities for imagery. The waves of the eggcartons limit the viewer's perception; they also make him aware of his positioning towards the image. LINK read more...

(via Enno de Kroon)

It is 25 years ago that I (and others) was involved in organizing the exhibition 'Da Da Mayakowsky' at the artist run Dionysus Gallery, Rotterdam. It was a first group exhibition of young non-conformist Russian artists and included works by upcoming artists like Timur Novikov and Sergej Bugaev.

New Alphabet for kids

Design/dtp dolfpauw

Learning the alphabet is fun. Singing the alphabet song has got to be one of the highlights of early life. When they started school many years ago, English students had to learn the ABC. Kids still do, but the only thing that stays the same is that A still stands for Apple! This is a good opportunity for lower level students (Básico 1 and Básico 2) to revise the spelling of the alphabet letters, and compare the way even the alphabet itself has adapted to changing times.

Özlem Altin

“Cathartic ballet”
@ CIRCUS, Berlin
April 27 - June 29, 2013

Özlem Altin’s works are usually installations. Working from a personal collection of pictures, she associatively contrasts the commonalities and contradictions of the images used. She is particularly interested in concepts of the body. Faces, as special features of the body’s identity, are usually covered and disguised. This renders people interchangeable, makes them lose their specific personal quality, and turns them into objects. LINK art-agenda

Rain Room

Rain Room (2012), a large-scale environment by Random International, is presented at The Museum of Modern Art from May 12 to July 28, 2013, as part of EXPO 1: New York. Rain Room consists of a field of falling water that visitors may walk through and experience how it might feel to control the rain. The work also invites visitors to explore what role science, technology, and human ingenuity can play in stabilizing our environment. Using digital technology, Rain Room is a carefully choreographed downpour - a monumental work that encourages people to become performers on an unexpected stage, while creating an intimate atmosphere of contemplation.

Jan Radersma

The Dutch painter Jan Radersma (Indonesia, 1948) prefers to work with self-made paints and surfaces are looking with concern. He is a poet who paints memories and scenic fragments shifts and edited down to the most intuitively appealing image. Delicate and understated, he creates his images with great care for the materials and the sophisticated planning. It is a work of subtle beauty to long and slow to enjoy. LINK Jan Radersma (in Dutch)

Petrit Halilaj

@ Kosovo Pavilion Venice Biennale
Courtesy the artist. Photo: Atdhe Mulla.

Petrit Halilaj, "I´m hungry to keep you close.
I want to find the words to resist but in the end there is a locked sphere. The funny thing is that you´re not here, nothing is.," 2013.
Various materials including birds, branches, earth, metal, clothes, dimensions variable. Upon entering the space hosting the Kosovan contribution to the 55th Venice Biennial visitors find themselves abruptly confronted with a strange structure built, or rather woven, of branches, twigs and rods gathered in Kosovo, its ground and walls covered with soil and mud. Taking up almost two-thirds of the space, the structure seems an alien sight, an alien body, atavistic within the Biennial's context of contemporary art; a foreign body migrated from some subconscious and forgotten era or territory into a vicinity that is nothing less than a renowned icon of the historic western world's cultural and artistic achievements. LINK Kosovo pavilion

Judd, who died in 1994 at the age of 65, didn’t believe in the afterlife, but he did believe in his art and his legacy. So it is hard not to imagine some kind of Judd spirit approving when 101 Spring Street, the five-story 19th-century cast-iron building in SoHo where he lived and worked off and on for 25 years, opens for small public tours on Monday, his 85th birthday. Its inauguration can only be good for art, design and architecture in New York City and elsewhere. LINK New York Times

Cindy Sherman - Untitled Horrors

@ Astrup Fearnley Museet Oslo

Cindy Sherman (b. 1954) is one of the leading and most influential artists of our time. She belongs to a generation of postmodern artists who redefined the photograph and its place in an ever more visually oriented culture. Taking female roles in photographic representations as her starting point, Sherman creates recognizable pictures that mirror the human condition in its many nuances. Sherman's pictures became key works in a time of turbulence for the very concept of art, and continue to challenge concepts of representation, identity and portrait. LINK Astrup Fearnley Museet
